In 1980 I read in my local paper the EDP that some engineers close to me in Norfolk were looking for someone to ride there Recumbent bike The Poppy Flyer for the Aspro Clear Speed Challenge in Brighton. At the time I was racing uprights in Road Races, Track Races and Time Trials so decided to give it a go. I went to the trial day at RAF Coltishall where I was fastest in the Poppy flyer and went on to be the fastest entrant from Europe at Brighton, being beaten by the two Vectors from the USA. When I got home I built myself a road going recumbent to train on then my own first Full-Faired recumbent the Birdcage which I got third place again at Brighton in 1981.
